Adopting a rescued cow is more than just bringing an animal into your life—it’s giving them a future they were never meant to have. These cows have been saved from slaughter, and for the first time, they have the chance to know safety, stability, and kindness. It takes a special kind of person to open their heart and home to an animal who has only ever been seen as a commodity. In return, they will show you just how deeply they can trust, bond, and thrive when given the chance. Adoption isn’t just about saving a life; it’s about changing both of yours forever.

Adoption Process

Things to consider before applying for adoption.

  • Property and pasture size depend on many factors e.g. location, rainfall etc. Although we recommend 2 acres per grown cow/steer, it should not deter you from applying as each adoption application will be tailored to support you through your adoption journey.

  • Fencing can be a painful and expensive hassle if you do not have the right type of fencing to contain your companion cows. We highly recommend adding electric standoffs to ensure your cows respect fences and are not able to rub or push on your fences to get to a blade of grass on the other side.

  • Water is an important consideration when thinking about adoption. Cows consume large volumes of water everyday so having an accessible dam or water trough with fresh drinking water is essential.

  • Here at Companion Cows we work hard to ensure our ex-dairy calves find their perfect forever families. All calves adopted must only be used as companion cows or loved lawnmooers. Our team of volunteers are committed to giving dairy cows and their calves a second chance at life. Adopters who use cows for meat, fur or breeding should not apply.

  • Last but not least, it is important to remember that cows are herd animals, they do not cope as solo pets. Because of this Companion Cows will only adopt out minimum of 2.
